ABOUT CHRISTINE TOMLINSON

A little about my background, the work I do and the place I call home.
Originally from Ontario, I've called Hope, British Columbia, home since 2020.
Over the past six years, I've developed a deep appreciation for this community and the surrounding region. From the mountains and trails to the history woven throughout the Fraser Valley, there's something remarkable about living in a place where nature, history and community are so closely connected.
But what makes a place home is more than its surroundings. It's the people you meet, the relationships you build and the opportunities you have to contribute to the community.
Through my involvement in local arts, heritage and community initiatives, I have had the opportunity to work with people of diverse backgrounds who have had the opportunity to dedicate their time, knowledge and creativity to make Hope a better place.
Hope is where I will continue building my life, putting down roots and contributing to the community's future.
My interests from history and public service to art, nature and community development, are all intrinsic values of mine. Understanding people, preserving what matters and exploring how we can create meaningful change should be important to everyone.
My Education: Understanding the Past, Thinking About the Future
My interest in public service is closely connected to my background in history. I am curious about how people, institutions, and communities evolve over time.
I graduated from the University of Ottawa with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and a minor in Greek and Roman Studies. Studying history taught me to look beyond individual events. It showed me how circumstances, decisions, and relationships shape societies. This work strengthened my ability to research complex subjects and to critically evaluate information. It also helped me consider different perspectives and understand how one generation’s decisions influence the next.
My academic work extended into public history and digital humanities. I explored how research, technology, and creative approaches can make knowledge more accessible and meaningful. These same interests guide my professional work and community involvement.
I am particularly committed to heritage preservation, public education, and the relationship between people and place. That perspective is especially meaningful to me in Hope, a community with a rich history, a changing population, and important decisions ahead about its future.
My Career: Public Service, Research & Communication
Since 2019, I have built my career in the federal public service with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, gaining experience in government communications, public opinion research, public consultation, ministerial services, and project coordination.
Working within government has given me insight into the responsibilities of public institutions and the work required to develop, communicate, and implement public programs and priorities.
My experience spans several interconnected areas of public service:
-
Public Opinion Research & Consultation
-
Government Communications & Ministerial Services
-
Research, Analysis & Collaboration
-
Leadership & Mental Health Initiatives
My career has taught me the importance of understanding complex issues, listening to different perspectives, and communicating decisions clearly. My involvement in Hope has given those principles a personal connection to the community I call home.
Through my career, I have developed an understanding of government operations, the influence of public perception on policy choices, and the importance of communicating complex information with clarity and accuracy. This work has honed my abilities in research, analysis, collaboration, and effectively navigating the processes and responsibilities of public institutions.
My involvement in public opinion research and stakeholder consultation has been particularly influential in shaping my commitment to meaningful public engagement. I believe that integrating diverse perspectives, asking well-considered questions, and presenting information accessibly are essential to responsible public service.
As I pursue the opportunity to serve on Hope Council, I intend to bring this blend of professional experience and community involvement to bear, offering a thoughtful, informed, and collaborative perspective on the decisions that will shape Hope’s future.
Empowering Hope Together
Hope’s future is shaped by the people who call it home. I believe meaningful change begins with listening, sharing ideas, and understanding the different experiences and perspectives within our community.
As a candidate for District of Hope Councillor, I’m looking forward to conversations about our community’s priorities, challenges, and opportunities, and how we can thoughtfully plan for the future while preserving what makes Hope unique.
